If you are considering renting one of our cabins in Cherokee, NC, you will enjoy beautiful local attractions. Our area is full of natural wonders, and two of them include the Great Smoky Mountains and the Oconaluftee River. These natural attractions offer plenty of opportunities for recreation, exploration, outdoor enjoyment and even access to Dollywood. There is no doubt that there is something for everyone around here. Here is an overview of where to visit and what to see when you stay with Huskey Cabin Rentals.

Exploring the Great Smoky Mountains

Located on the boarder of North Carolina and Tennessee, the Great Smoky Mountains offer hiking and restaurants, and are the home of the famous Dollywood. Any time spent in the Great Smokies is not wasted, and there is something that will appeal to any tourist.

The center of this natural monument is the Smoky Mountains National Park. Many trails take you to overlooks, rivers, waterfalls and old train tracks. Sugarland Riding Stables gives you an opportunity to explore the park on horseback, and you can enjoy mountain scenery on Newfound Gap Road and Cades Cove Loop. The highest point in the park is Clingmans Dome, which sits at 6,654 feet above sea level. There are hiking trails available to all of the sites, and you can download maps and guides from the website.

If you are looking for more of the Six Flags experience, Dollywood offers thrilling rides along with shops and restaurants. Located in Pigeon Forge, the park opens again in March. This is a great opportunity for family entertainment as you enjoy roller coasters and water rides.

Visiting the Oconaluftee River

The Oconaluftee River offers the ultimate fly-fishing experience, as well as historic significance. Located in the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains, it is part of an archeological district call Oconaluftee. It features a rich history involving the Cherokee tribes and early Appalachian culture. The river is right at the entry for the Great Smoky Mountains on the North Carolina side.

For fishing, this is one of the best trout streams in the park. Since it is heavily fished, access and catch limits will vary each year. Check regulations when you secure your license. There are also several tributary streams off the Oconaluftee that also feature excellent fishing opportunities. The river and its streams are rated as moderately difficult, so be sure to bring your best fishing gear to catch that trophy trout.

While exploring the river, take the time to check out historic sites, too. The park service maintains Mingus Mill, the Mountain Farm Museum and Oconaluftee Indian Village, which is also operated by the Cherokee Historical Association. It is an excellent opportunity to learn about the culture of the area and how tribal members and settlers alike survived and thrived.

Cabins in Cherokee, NC make a great starting point for exploring history, enjoying the outdoors or even having fun at Dollywood. Call Huskey Cabin Rentals to see what we offer and to make a reservation.
